Shottr
Shottr is a macOS screenshot app that adds scrolling capture, text recognition, annotation and measuring tools to the Mac's built-in screenshots, for designers, developers and anyone who sends a lot of annotated screens.
Updated October 2026

Overview: What is Shottr?
It's free to try, and a Basic license is a one-time $12 (checked October 2026).
Take an area, window, full-screen or scrolling screenshot, then mark it up in a small editor: arrows, text, a step counter, spotlight, blur and pixelation. Its pixel tools (a ruler, magnifier, color picker and contrast checker) are what set it apart from most screenshot apps. The download is about 2.4 MB, it runs on macOS 10.15 and later, and it was updated for macOS 27 in September 2026.
Fit: Ideal customer profile.
Mac users who take screenshots all day and want them marked up, measured or turned into text quickly, without a subscription. It isn't for Windows users, and it isn't a fit if you need screen recording or hosted share links, because Shottr does neither.

Usage
How to use Shottr.
Install the app, grant screen recording permission, and set your own hotkeys for area, window, full-screen and scrolling capture. Screenshots open in the editor, or as a preview thumbnail if you prefer, and can be copied, saved, dragged into another app or uploaded to your own S3 bucket. A URL scheme lets Raycast, Alfred and scripts trigger captures.

Questions
Frequently asked.
Is Shottr free?
You can download and use it for free. After 30 days it starts asking you to upgrade, and a paid Basic license ($12 one-time) is needed for commercial use (checked October 2026).
Does Shottr work on Windows?
No. Shottr is a macOS app only. It runs on macOS 10.15 Catalina and later and is built for Apple silicon.
Can Shottr record video?
No, it takes screenshots only. It can make a two-frame before and after GIF from a screenshot and an overlay, but screen recording needs another tool such as Loom.
What are Shottr's limits?
It's Mac only, it doesn't record video, and sharing means uploading to your own S3-compatible storage rather than a hosted link. A Basic license also can't be upgraded to Friends Club later.
What are the alternatives to Shottr?
Zight combines screenshots with hosted links and screen video, Loom and Screencastify record screen video, and Scribe turns clicks into step-by-step guides with screenshots.
