What is MEDDPICC?
Quick answer

MEDDPICC is a B2B sales qualification framework built around eight factors, Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Paper Process, Identify Pain, Champion, and Competition, that together tell a rep whether a deal will close and whether they can win it.

MEDDPICC is a B2B sales qualification framework built around eight factors, Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Paper Process, Identify Pain, Champion, and Competition, that together tell a rep whether a deal will close and whether they can win it.

At a glance

  • Used by B2B account executives and revenue leaders to qualify mid-market and enterprise deals.
  • Each letter is a question requiring a specific answer, not an assumption or a placeholder.
  • Consistent use is linked to forecast accuracy improvements of 20 to 30 percent within two quarters.
  • Paper Process is the most skipped element and the most common cause of missed quarters.
  • A champion is not the same as a sponsor. A true champion has personal stake and will advocate internally.

What does each letter in MEDDPICC actually mean?

Every element is a question a rep must answer with specifics, sourced from direct conversations, not guesses filled in to satisfy a CRM field.

  • Metrics: What quantified outcome does the buyer expect? “Save time” is not enough. “Reduce onboarding from 14 days to 5” is.
  • Economic Buyer: Who has final budget authority and signs the contract? This person is often not in the room during discovery.
  • Decision Criteria: What does the buying committee actually use to evaluate vendors? Security certifications, integration depth, pricing model, or reference customers in their vertical.
  • Decision Process: What are the internal steps from shortlist to signed contract, and who owns each one?
  • Paper Process: What happens after a verbal yes? Legal review, procurement, IT security, board approval for large deals. This is where deals go quiet for 60 days or more.
  • Identify Pain: What is the cost of doing nothing? Abstract pain stalls deals. A $2M annual engineering cost moves them forward.
  • Champion: Who inside the account is selling for you when you are not in the room? A champion has personal stake in the outcome and will fight for the deal internally.
  • Competition: Who else is in the deal, including the buyer’s option to build in-house or do nothing?

Why does MEDDPICC matter for B2B revenue teams?

Most forecast misses come from reps qualifying on interest rather than fit and intent. MEDDPICC forces the right questions early, when there is still time to requalify or walk away. A 60-day deal that closes is better than a 180-day deal that dies in legal review.

For revenue leaders, the framework also creates a shared vocabulary across the team. When every account executive uses the same structure, pipeline reviews become faster and more predictable, because deals missing a champion or a defined paper process get removed from the forecast rather than carried as wishful thinking.

What are the most common MEDDPICC mistakes?

Treating it as a checklist

The most common failure is completing MEDDPICC fields to satisfy a CRM requirement rather than because the rep actually knows the answers. “TBD” next to Economic Buyer on a $400K deal is a forecast risk, not a qualification.

Skipping Paper Process

In enterprise deals, procurement and legal can add six to ten weeks after a verbal agreement. A rep who does not know the paper process timeline is at risk of missing a quarter on a deal that was technically won.

How does MEDDPICC compare to other qualification frameworks?

BANT tells you whether a prospect has Budget, Authority, Need, and Timeline. MEDDPICC tells you how to win the deal once you know those basics. A champion without access to the Economic Buyer is a weak champion. Decision Criteria that the rep helped shape early becomes a competitive advantage. These are not BANT questions.

For teams running account-based motions, MEDDPICC maps naturally to ABM because both require deep understanding of the buying committee before investing significant resources in an account.
