Overview: What is Wappalyzer?

The browser extension is free, a free account includes 50 lookups a month, and paid plans start at $250 a month on Pro (checked October 2026).

The Chrome extension has about 3 million users and detects more than a thousand technologies, from CMS and ecommerce platforms to analytics, payments and CRM tools. Paid plans add lead lists with company and contact data, bulk lookups, email verification, APIs and CRM enrichment. It's built by Wappalyzer Pty Ltd in Australia, and its detection rules have been closed source since August 2023.

Fit: Ideal customer profile.

Sales and marketing teams whose ICP is defined by technology, such as selling to Shopify stores or to companies on a competitor's product, who want lists and alerts rather than one-off checks. Teams that only need to peek at one site's stack can use the free extension, and teams that need years of adoption history may prefer BuiltWith.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Is Wappalyzer free?

The browser extension is free and works without an account. A free account adds 50 lookups and email verifications a month, 5 website alerts and sample lead lists. Lead lists, APIs and CRM integrations need a paid plan.

How much does Wappalyzer cost?

Pro is $250 a month, Business $450 and Enterprise from $850, with 17% off on annual billing.

Is Wappalyzer open source?

Not anymore. Its technology rules were open source until August 2023, when the public repository was taken down. Community forks continue from the last open release.

What are Wappalyzer's limits?

Plan API credits expire after 60 days, so seasonal users can lose them, and Pro caps how many technologies you can build lists on. Like any detector, it reports what it recognizes, so a missing result doesn't prove a site doesn't use a tool.

What are the alternatives to Wappalyzer?

BuiltWith adds long technology history from a server-side crawl, WhatRuns is a free extension, WhatCMS focuses on CMS detection, and PublicWWW searches page source code for any snippet.
